Chaakapesh with the Montreal Symphony

Writer's picture: Owen McCauslandOwen McCausland

2018/2019 Season began with the debut of a new opera with the Montreal Symphony as part of their season opening concert. It was composed by Matthew Ricketts and Tomson Highway and sung in Cree. I sang the title role of Chaakapesh with Geoffrey Salvas singing the baritone role of Mantou. We were joined by Florent Vollant, Ernest Webb and Akinisie sivuarapik who narrated through the performance. After two semi-staged performances at the Maison Symphonique in Montreal we toured it through 6 first nations communities in remote northern Quebec and Nunavik. This was an unforgettable adventure and experience. Incredible to work with Kent Nagano at the helm and share this important work with northern communities.
